Warning signs
Warning signs warn you of a hazard ahead. They are usually placed on the right-hand side of the road, but if that is not possible, they may be positioned above the carriageway. They may also be repeated, for example in busy locations.
Except at a level crossing (signs A45 and A47), warning signs are normally placed about 150 metres before the hazard. If the distance is shorter or longer, it is shown on a supplementary sign.
A supplementary sign can also show how far the hazard extends.
Road signs
You must know the type and meaning of each road sign, understand who it applies to and which part of the carriageway it applies to. You do not, of course, need to know the sign number.

Supplementary signs: distance to the hazard
If the hazard is not about 150 metres ahead, the actual distance is shown on a supplementary sign. Here are a few examples:
