The Category B theory test

From the age of 17, you may take the Category B theory test. You can take it at a test centre in Flanders, Wallonia or the Brussels-Capital Region.

Always bring your original identity card, a copy will not be accepted. If you wear glasses, make sure you bring them too.

You’ll get 50 multiple-choice questions about the traffic rules. To pass, you need to score at least 41 out of 50.

The questions are read aloud and also shown on the screen, together with a photo. Once the question has been read out, you have 15 seconds to answer.

After the test, you can immediately review the questions you answered incorrectly. You won’t be able to view them again later.

You start with 50 points. For a wrong answer, you lose 1 point, but be careful: some questions cost you 5 points straight away if you answer them incorrectly. These are questions about:

• third-degree offences
• fourth-degree offences
• questions about the maximum permitted speed

If you leave one of these questions unanswered, you lose 1 point.

Two serious mistakes cost you 10 points, so you can no longer pass.

If you pass, you’ll take an eye test at the test centre. You’ll then receive an application form that you can use to apply for a provisional driving licence.

Your passed theory test remains valid for 3 years, so you must also pass your practical driving test within that period.

Didn’t pass? Don’t worry. You can take the test again from the very next day. After two failed attempts, you must complete 12 hours of theory lessons at an approved driving school.

Stay calm, keep practising and don’t let it discourage you. If you consistently get good scores here, you’ll already be well prepared for the real test. And before you know it, you’ll have your provisional driving licence in hand!
